However in Nigeria, STEM education is still in its infancy despite the importance of it to the nation’s future. Aside the challenges faced by the education system in the country such as lack of funding, inadequate infrastructure and incessant strikes .STEM education is faced by insufficient number of STEM educators needed to provide training to young Nigerians and the waning interest from students in STEM. In Nigeria and the rest of Africa, technology companies are springing up, jobs requiring STEM graduates is on the rise, however there is not enough well trained STEM graduates in the country.
Responding to calls from the central government and Lagos state government on the need of STEM education in the country, LABS established the Academy STEM Advisory Council to develop investment plans in STEM research, education and job and workforce development. The council’s first initiative is to build an ultra- modern STEM HUB in the heart of Lagos to provide training to secondary schools students on computer programming, artificial intelligence, big data, machine learning, deep learning and augmented reality. The LABS STEM hub is also going to provide career and academic program exploration through summer school programs, offer diploma and STEM career fairs and events, job placement and internships to secondary school students in Nigeria. The LABS STEMS HUB plans to increase the interest of students in STEM and get students ready for STEM degrees in colleges and universities.
LABS STEM HUB in addressing the issue of gender equality in education, will offer scholarships, discount and flexible payment plans to brilliant young girls. This is to increase the level of interest of STEM among young girls and contribute to women empowerment programs across the country to educate the girl child. Once young girls are well educated they can access more job and school opportunities, attain higher wages and contribute to economic growth of the country. In the long run this will also reduce teenage pregnancy, gender based violence and social vices among young girls.
With a strong reputation in the United Kingdom, Europe, Middle East, Africa and the rest of the world, LABS has the technical expertise, industry contacts, experienced lectures, curriculum, relevant technologies, equipment and certifications to execute the STEM project. The only outstanding element is the physical building to teach young Nigerian students. The LABS STEM HUB building is going to boast of state of the art science laboratories, computer laboratories, workshops, libraries, lecture theatres, classrooms, conference rooms, offices and fitted with modern day equipment, devices and technologies. LABS seeks to secure funding of £300,000 to undertake this building project, £20,000 of which has already been secured. LABS is appealing to government agencies, corporate bodies, NGOs, private institutions and individuals to donate towards this worthy cause to help secure the future of Nigeria science and innovation initiatives.
